Frequently Asked Wildlife Questions

Wildlife in the State of Colorado is under the control of the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

What do I do if I have an unwanted wildlife encounter?

There are methods you can try to prevent animals and birds from entering your home, entice them to leave once they do enter, and ward off an unwanted encounter. Otherwise, contact the Colorado Division of Wildlife at 303-297-1192 or a private animal removal agency.

Who do I contact about wildlife regulations?

For questions regarding hunting and fishing or the harassment and/or illegal taking of wildlife, contact the Colorado Division of Wildlife. To report a violation call Operation Game Thief at 800-332-4155. Contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for questions regarding the legal protection status of threatened and endangered species, the candidate status of proposed species, and copies of the pertinent laws and regulations.

What if I have questions about wildlife on open space?

For questions about wildlife seen or encountered on Boulder County open space only, contact Boulder County Parks and Open Space Wildlife Specialists at: mbrennan@co.boulder.co.us, dhoerath@co.boulder.co.us or call: 303-516-9361/9364.

What about wildlife on other public lands?

For wildlife problems, such as a bear encounter, contact the Colorado Division of Wildlife at 303-297-1192. It will be investigated by the Colorado Division of Wildlife manager in the appropriate district.

Contact the appropriate agency for other questions regarding wildlife on City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks, U.S. Forest Service lands, including the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, or in Rocky Mountain National Park

Who should I contact about general wildlife questions?

For general questions about the life history, distribution and occurrence of a species in Boulder County, contact the Colorado Natural Heritage Program at Colorado State University. They track all elemental occurrences (EO) of species in the state.

Who should I contact about bird species?

For general bird identification questions, there are a number of good birding field guides available on the market. If you have identified a rare bird, contact the local chapter of the Audubon Society or the Colorado Bird Observatory.
