Volunteer Naturalist Program
If you enjoy exploring and
sharing the natural wonders of Boulder County with others, consider
becoming a Parks and Open Space Volunteer Naturalist. We’re looking for
people with a passion for nature, some knowledge of local natural
history, and a strong desire to learn more and share their passion with
others.
Applications

in November each year and a 10-week training
program is required.

As a volunteer naturalist, you will inform the
public about the natural history of Boulder County, especially regarding county
open space properties. You'll lead interpretive nature hikes, present public
natural history slide programs, and provide hands-on environmental
experiences for participants of all ages.
This volunteer experience is a great way to learn more about your local
open space. During your 10-week training, you’ll learn about Boulder
County's local history; geology; plants and ecosystems; forestry;
wildlife and birds; agricultural lands and weed management; water
resources; the department’s resource management activities and
interpretive techniques and resources.
Qualifications:

At least 18 years old

Strong background and/or interest in the natural history of Boulder
County

Some knowledge of the natural sciences

Good communication skills
-
Willingness to learn and desire to share knowledge with others

Enthusiasm

Self-motivated and independent worker

Dependable
-
Some ongoing weekday availability
Requirements:
-
Completion of Volunteer Naturalist 10-week Training Course, with two
program shadows by the end of training.

Present a minimum of six requested programs by the end of the
calendar year.

Attend at least two advanced training sessions, field trips or
workshops per year (after the first year).

Report volunteer hours and programs presented annually to the
Natural History Program Coordinator.
