Solar Energy Systems Planning and Construction

Boulder County strongly supports the shift from fuels that generate greenhouse gases to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. On this page you’ll find resources for planning and building a solar thermal or photovoltaic system for your home in unincorporated Boulder County.

Learn more about loans and assistance with solar installations through EnergySmart, or view the Denver Regional Solar Map to get information about your site's solar photovoltaic (PV) potential and how it can benefit you.

For general information on solar and wind energy initiatives and sustainability in Boulder County, contact Sustainability Coordinator Susie Strife at sstrife@bouldercounty.org or 303-441-4565.

Solar Building Permit Submittal Requirements

Please view the publications pertaining to your solar project:

Ground-mounted small solar energy systems that are accessory to a residence, such as ground-mounted photovoltaic, are eligible for the expedited Site Plan Review Waiver planning process. See the Land Use Publication Renewable Energy Systems (52 KB) for more details.

For questions on electrical or photovoltaic systems plans and designs, contact Building Inspector Brian Nye at bnye@bouldercounty.org, or 720-564-2615.

Our goal is to issue all simple solar permits in two weeks or less. Inspection requests called in prior to 3 p.m. will be inspected the following day. Call 303-441-3925 to learn your approximate place in the inspection queue.

Please contact the Building Safety and Inspection Services Team at 303-441-3926 if you have questions or need additional information.
