Reused, Recycled and Sustainable Building Products used in the Boulder County Recycling Center

Many of the materials used to build the Boulder County Recycling Center are made of recycled products, are reused items, or promote sustainability.

In the Education Center

  • Acoustic Ceiling – made from recycled newspapers. A variety of products are available through most local contractors.
  • Carpet – made from recycled plastic (PET) soda bottles.
  • Countertops – made from 100% post-consumer recycled milk jugs and plastic detergent bottles.
  • Paint – is recycled paint. Custom-blended color from Amazon Environmental, Inc. Amazon paint, for residential use, is sold as ReCover by Dunn-Edwards. Many local vendors also carry low fume, or low VOC, paints.
  • Clock – from recycled computer parts.

Lobby First Floor

  • Floor Mats at entryways - made from 100% recycled PVC plastic.
  • Benches - made from 100% post-consumer recycled milk jugs and plastic detergent bottles.

In the Bathrooms

  • Light Tubes – suntubes or skylights provide natural lighting from two stories above.
  • Countertops and Toilet Partitions - made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic milk jugs and detergent bottles.
  • Walls – are recycled steel sheathing.  Available locally through most building contractors.

Lobby Second Floor

  • Furniture – tables and chairs are made from recycled plastic.

Tour Walkway

  • Grassboard – 100% ryegrass stem wallboard was used instead of gypsum in the tour walkway.
  • Window Shades – blackout honeycomb shades made from waste fabric.

Reused Items Include

  • Wooden Doors – in the Boulder County offices.
    Conference Table and Chairs – in the staff conference room.
  • Office Partitions – in the Eco-Cycle offices.

Outside

  • Car Stops – in the parking lots are made from recycled plastic.
  • Plastic Decking – at the drop-off and on the second floor patio, is made from recycled plastic bottles, bags and post-industrial ash juniper fibers.
  • Black Retaining Wall – to the south of the administration building, between the compost demo site and the asphalt, is made from recycled plastic.
  • Photovoltaic Power – used to power the fuel oil pump for BCRC’s front-end loaders.
  • Furniture – benches near compost demonstration site and picnic set on second floor deck are made from recycled plastic.
