FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 30, 2007

Free mountain slash drop-off sites close for winter

Effective October 31, Boulder County's two free mountain slash drop-off sites, located in Allenspark and Nederland, will close for the winter due to the difficulty of chipping frozen slash. The service will resume in spring 2008. The two sites are located at the waste transfer station and recycling centers at 14875 Hwy 7, Allenspark, and 286 Ridge Road, Nederland. This service allows mountain residents to dispose of slash (tree limbs up to 6" in diameter and brush).

County residents can continue to use the County and the city of Boulder's year-round organic waste drop-off center at Western Disposal Services' Transfer Station, 5880 Butte Mill Road, Boulder (½ mile east of the junction of Pearl and 55th Street). This facility is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round; and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (March to November) and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (November to March). The cost to use the center for residents of unincorporated Boulder County is $27.87 per ton, 60% of the regular cost. Quantities less than a ton are charged a pro-rated amount. Boulder County pays 40% of the cost of this service.

In August 2007 the County began offering free slash drop off at Nederland, where previously a charge of $5.00 per cubic yard had been charged, and started slash collections at Allenpark for the first time. The service has been extremely popular. Wood chips are free to residents to use as mulch.

The County also provides financial assistance to mountain communities who organize chipping projects serving at least 20 property-owners. Subject to pre-approval by the County, the County will reimburse 40% of the cost of community chipping projects. Many communities, resident groups, homeowners associations and fire districts regularly benefit from this program that supports wildfire mitigation efforts throughout the mountains. Applications for the 2008 program will be invited from mountain towns and communities next spring.
