Boulder County awards funding to programs to reduce waste, promote recycling

The Boulder County Board of County Commissioners has awarded $36,702 to seven waste reduction programs for the Resource Conservation Division's Community Outreach Program 2006.

For the past nine years, the Boulder County Resource Conservation Division has funded $675,000 towards educational or infrastructure programs within Boulder County and Broomfield County.

Programs funded for 2006:

·        ReSource Website Redesign                                                      $5,000

Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC)

ReSource will use funds to redesign the ReSource website to enable customers to view inventory at ReSource without needing to make a trip to the facility. This will reduce unnecessary trips while increasing sales and waste diversion.

·        Recycling Containers at the Boulder Reservoir                    $10,000

The City of Boulder will use funds to purchase recycling containers for permanent placement at the Boulder Reservoir. With more than 35,000 visitors generating 110,840 pounds of trash a year, introducing a recycling program to this recreation area will not only educate tens of thousands of people a year but also will assist with Boulder's waste reduction goal.

·        City of Longmont's REACH (Reuse, Education And Community Help) program assistance                                                                                        $3,000

City of Longmont

The City of Longmont's REACH program will use funds for a storage trailer to store reused items from its Stop-n-Drop events. The reused items are set aside by volunteers and distributed to non-profit groups for low-income or humanitarian needs.

·        City of Louisville Zero Waste Events                                        $2,500

City of Louisville

The City of Louisville will use funds to continue to sponsor its four city Zero-Waste events in 2006.

·        Litterless Lunch Project and Waste-Free Lunch Contest   $3,820

Eco-Cycle/Boulder County School Recycling and Env. Education Program

Eco-Cycle/Boulder County School Recycling and Environmental Education Program will use funds to purchase reusable cloth lunch bags for the Litterless Lunch Project and to implement the Waste-Free Lunch Contest. This will enable Eco-Cycle to implement the Litterless Lunch Project in at least 20 classrooms and the Waste Free Lunch contest in six schools, involving approximately 3,000 students and their families countywide.

·        Growing Green Tours: A Composting Education Project  $4,766

Eco-Cycle/Boulder County School Recycling and Env. Education Program

Eco-Cycle/Boulder County School Recycling and Environmental Education Program will use funds for 12 Growing Green Tours for 3rd - 5th grade students in Boulder and Broomfield County public schools. These tours promote composting to participating students and their families, and encourage teachers to include composting in their curriculum.

·        Hydraulic Lift Stake Body Truck Bed                                               $7,616

The Green Girl Recycling Services

Green Girl will use funds to purchase a second 10-foot long hydraulically operated staked bed. This will allow Green Girl to double the amount of homes they currently provide recycling services for in the mountains.
