Boulder County awards funding to divert waste from area landfills

Boulder County Board of County Commissioners awards a total of $50,000 to 10 waste reduction programs for the Resource Conservation Division’s Community Outreach Program 2004.

“Boulder County is unique in the fact that not many counties in this country give out funding for waste reduction programs. By funding these programs, we have the ability to divert tons and tons of material from going to area landfills,” said Stacy Lambright, Boulder County Resource Conservation Division education and outreach coordinator.

For the past seven years, the Boulder County Resource Conservation Division has funded $584,000 towards educational or infrastructure programs within Boulder County and Broomfield County.

Programs funded for 2004:

County Recycling Drop-off Center Needs

Boulder County Resource Conservation Division

Resource Conservation will use funds for a concrete pad and recycled plastic fencing at a new recycling Drop-off Center (DOC) being developed to serve Eldorado Springs & S. Boulder; a concrete pad at a new DOC being developed to serve Lefthand Canyon and N. Boulder; and a concrete pad for a new DOC serving Niwot and surrounding unincorporated Boulder County.

Boulder County Master Composter Program

Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC)

CRC will use funds for continued support of the Boulder County Master Composter Program. The purpose of the program is to offer in-depth training in composting techniques and funds will be used to support the coordination of the class of 30 participants and their public service requirements. This program is a partnership between the Boulder County Resource Conservation Division, Center for ReSource Conservation and Colorado State University Boulder County Extension Service.

ReSource Infrastructure Improvement Project

ReSource will use funds to lay an asphalt apron at the used building material sales yard exit to increase safety for vehicles leaving the facility.

Composting for Lafayette Community Events

City of Lafayette

The City of Lafayette will use funds to increase its waste diversion efforts by composting at its four major outdoor community events: the January Oatmeal Festival, June Colorado Wine Festival, August Peach Festival, and September Celebrate Lafayette Street Fair. Each event draws 5,000 -10,000 people.  Funded items include: compostable cutlery, dinnerware, and bags; Gaylord boxes; composting collection services; and three new recycling bins dedicated to composting.

City of Louisville Zero Waste Event

City of Louisville

The City of Louisville will use funds to further increase waste diversion within the city and to educate residents on how they can recycle by operating one of its annual celebrations, the 2004 Fourth of July Festival, as a zero waste event. Several zero waste stations will be located throughout the Festival.

Bonai Composts

Congregation Bonai Shalom

The Congregation Bonai Shalom will use funds for an on-site composting pilot project for kitchen and yard waste resulting from religious and social activities of Congregation Bonai Shalom. Funding will also be used for an educational and hands-on related component in the synagogue day school of 80 students.

Business Food Waste Collection Pilot

Eco-Cycle

Eco-Cycle will use funds for general project support to launch a six-month pilot food waste collection project for businesses in Boulder County as the first step in a permanent food waste composting program.

EXTRAs! educational outreach flurry

EXTRAs! for education

EXTRAs! will use funding to increase the diversion of re-useable materials from waste in Boulder County by embarking on an educational outreach flurry to homes and businesses via newsletters, strategically placed brochures, eye-catching media advertisements and a website. The educational outreach will also include schools and nonprofit organizations as the recipients of the re-usable items diverted from waste.

Hydraulic Lift Stake Body Truck Bed for a 4x4 Truck

The Green Girl

The Green Girl will use funds to purchase a specific hydraulic dumping stake body truck bed. The truck bed will allow The Green Girl to more than double its current recycling truck-load capacity, reduce the number of driving trips between the mountains and the recycling processing center, speed up its pick-up and drop-off queues, and significantly reduce the amount of fuel required to run its business each month.

Replacement of Deck at Drop-off Center

Town of Erie

The Town of Erie will use fund to replace the deck and steps at the Erie Recycling Center. The new decking is made from manufactured timbers that are made primarily with recycled plastic grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and waste wood. The new deck ensures a safe, attractive and user-friendly recycling drop-off center.
