The Boulder County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program
is requesting your patience for a few weeks this spring, while Western
Disposal Services (WDS) adds a second scale to their scale house. The HHW
collection facility is located in the southeast corner of the WDS property
at 5880 Butte Mill RD in east Boulder. The addition of a second scale will
provide added convenience for customers dropping off their regular waste,
wood waste, and yard waste. While this scale is being built, residents
dropping off household hazardous wastes will still be able to bypass the
scale house to the east by using a gravel lane. This lane will take HHW
customers next to the construction area; consequently extra caution is
advised when driving in and out of Western’s facility to drop off your
HHW.
The facility will continue to operate on the regular
schedule of Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday’s and
Saturday’s from 8:00 a.m. to 12 Noon. Reusable products are offered to
the public, free of charge, and on a first-come, first-served basis during
these hours. The facility accepts many products that are in good condition
and suitable for reuse. These products include paints, stains, varnishes,
wood sealants, garden products, woodworking supplies, auto products, hobby
and house cleaning products.
The facility serves Boulder, Erie, Jamestown, Lafayette,
Longmont, Louisville, Nederland, Lyons, Superior, Ward, unincorporated
Boulder County, out-of-County Erie residents, and Broomfield County. No
appointment is necessary and there is no charge to drop off wastes,
although each community pays for the program based on the usage of the
facility by its residents. Costs for 2003 were $42.17 per household
served.
The program accepts most household hazardous waste
products, including auto, garden, and cleaning products. Some examples
include: antifreeze, household and car batteries, car cleaners and waxes,
household drain cleaners, degreasers, deodorizers, floor cleaners,
fluorescent light tubes, laundry products, oven cleaners, rodent poison,
moth balls, paint products, rust removers, weed killers, insecticides,
flea powders, and wood preservatives.
Residents are strongly encouraged to clearly label ALL
containers being brought to the facility. Gasoline should only be
transported to the collection facility in gas cans designed for
transporting flammable liquids. Note: Gas containers cannot be returned to
customers the same day they are dropped off. However, they can be picked
up at a later date if requested.
Please note that the following items are not accepted:
-
Radioactive materials, including smoke detectors
-
Explosives, including fireworks, ammunition, and road
flares
-
Medical wastes or medicines
-
Containers that are more than 10 gallons or 20 pounds
-
Containers that are completely empty

Wastes from businesses (including no-profit
