Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program Begins To Accept Donations
In order to help fund this important public service, the Boulder County HHW Program has begun for the first time to accept voluntary donations from residents.
The HHW Program serves cities and towns of Boulder County, unincorporated areas of Boulder County, Broomfield City and County, and the Town of Erie (which spans Boulder and Weld counties). The program has been in operation for 14 years and helps approximately 10,000 households per year to safely dispose of hazardous household chemicals and wastes. Through an intergovernmental agreement with participating municipalities, Boulder County operates a year-round collection facility at the Western Disposal Services Transfer Station, 5880 Butte Mill Road, Boulder, and works with several communities to provide annual collection events.
Tight budgets and consistent growth in demand has lead member communities to look for ways to offset rising costs. Participating communities have historically paid approximately $42.00 per household for their residents to use the HHW facility, with collection events costing somewhat less depending on the number of households served.
“We were pleasantly surprised that people are so willing to donate. Obviously the program is serving an important need and people are very grateful to have somewhere to take all their leftover and unwanted household hazardous chemicals,” says John Walsh, HHW Technician.
A convenient donations box has been added at the HHW facility (see photo attached). Tax-deductible receipts are available on request.
The facility is open on Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Reusable products are also available free to the public during these hours. More information is available at the HHW Hot Line at 303.441.4800, or via the County web site.
