The Field Operations Division is comprised of 129.25 employees divided among
four sections. The division is
responsible for all enforcement operations for the Sheriff's Office and includes sections which perform the
functions of patrol and traffic enforcement, investigations, animal control, evidence storage, training, crime
prevention and Law Related Education.
The Field Operations Division strives for excellence in delivering law enforcement services to Boulder County
communities by ensuring appropriate staffing, training and assignment of personnel. We also strive to instill the
concepts of "crime prevention" and "problem solving" as everyday work values in all our
personnel. We intend to respond pro-actively to anticipated public safety problems through continued use of our
assigned district plan and "community policing" philosophy and attitude. We stress the concepts of
innovation, community participation, problem solving and continued assessment and evaluation of our efforts as we
endeavor to be effective in our day-to-day service delivery.
PATROL - The Patrol Section is responsible for providing law enforcement and peace keeping services to the
unincorporated areas of Boulder County and the towns of Superior and Lyons. This section has 2 commanders, 12
sergeants, and 52 deputies. The county is divided into six districts. Four of the districts are in the east portion
of the county and two are in the west portion (mountains) of the county. Each district has least one substation
which the district officers can utilize as office space during their tour of duty. Each district has at least two
officers from each watch (shift) who are permanently assigned (one year duration) to that district. The remainder
of the officers are assigned more specialized duties like traffic enforcement or DUI enforcement. Beginning in
February, 1996, the patrol officers will work 12 hour shifts. The shift times are: Days, 0600-1800;
Power shift, 1400-0030;
Nights, 1800-0600.
DETECTIVES - The Detective Section is responsible for investigating all serious felony cases and all cases
that will require substantial time and resources to resolve. (This section also assigns a unit of investigators who
are responsible for pursuing narcotics/dangerous drugs violators.) This section has 1 Commander, 2 sergeants and 11
detectives. The detectives investigate and follow up on an average of 1400 cases each year.
Detectives are assigned to work Monday - Saturday, 07:30 - 18:00. They also rotate through an "on-call"
position several weeks each year so that there are resources always available to investigate serious crimes.
CIVIL SECTION - Colorado Statute provides that the Sheriff in each county has the authority to serve
and execute all civil processes, writs, precepts, and orders lawfully issued. (C.R.S. 30-10-515). The Civil
Section of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for providing support in accomplishing the service
of civil related paperwork for the County of Boulder.
The functions of the Civil Section other than service of process, includes evictions, court ordered seizures
of both personal and real property, sheriff’s sales, assistance to both the Boulder County Treasurer as well as
the Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s Office.
The Civil Section consists of three Deputies, two Law Enforcement Paralegal Assistants, one Paralegal Specialist
and one Commander. The Civil Section provides the public with efficient, effective service, with character,
competence and open communication.
EMERGENCY SERVICES GROUP - The Emergency Services Group of the Boulder County Sheriff's Office represents the statutory responsibilities of
the Boulder County Sheriff in search and rescue, wildland fire suppression, hazardous materials incidents,
structure fire investigations, natural disasters and is a liaison to the other emergency service providers in
Boulder County.
