The Boulder County Sheriff's Office Victim Assistance Program is staffed by dedicated and trained volunteer
victim advocates. Through on-call and outreach programs, volunteer victim advocates, working in conjunction with
Boulder County law enforcement agencies and the Criminal Justice System, provide crisis response to victims of
violent crime and trauma and survivors of sudden death. Advocates are trained to provide support, assistance,
information and advocacy to those people they are called upon to help.
Victim advocates, as well as the people they assist, benefit from this demanding work. The initial shock
following a crime, sudden death or other trauma is often a harsh and painful reality for everyone involved.
Volunteer advocates focus their attention on the victims and their family, helping them to cope with the crisis at
hand and informing them of their rights. Advocates can act as liaison with the law enforcement agency and criminal
justice system. Many resources are available in the community and advocates can initiate contact with them through
referrals.
Advocates often feel a sense of deep satisfaction when helping people who may be in shock, feeling disoriented,
confused, helpless, angry, devastated and/or overwhelmed. Most victims are very grateful and appreciative to have
someone to lean on during a time of crisis, and this translates into immediate positive feedback for the victim
advocates.
