Victim Advocate - Outreach

Objectives of Program: The program is designed to provide outreach to victims of crime. The objective of the outreach program is to provide information, support, referral and advocacy by volunteer victim advocates to victims of crime.

Job Responsibility: The Coordinator provides advocates with information regarding victims to be contacted. Advocates must make attempts to contact victims assigned to them within 48 hours to offer information, advocacy and referrals useful to their case. The advocate is responsible for interfacing with law enforcement and the criminal justice system to gather case information for the victim.

Minimum Qualifications: Advocates must be self-motivated, flexible and work well independently. Patience and determination are beneficial qualities for this position. It is helpful if advocates enjoy problem solving and research. Advocates must have an open, non-judgmental attitude towards victims/survivors. The ability to communicate well, think well, and respond quickly are essential qualifications. Genuine concern and empathy for victims of crime and survivors, regardless of the circumstances, are necessary qualities.

Time Commitment: The advocate must be willing to make a one-year commitment to the program, to attend monthly support meetings, and to commit to an average of 4 to 6 hours of victim outreach per week.

Training Provided: The 40-45 hour training course includes crisis counseling, victimology, legal procedures, law enforcement, resource information, as well as a ride along with a law enforcement officer.

Special Requirements: The advocate must have his/her own transportation, a phone available where he/she can be reached during the day and/or night, and be willing to submit to an employment/character background investigation.
