Productive Day is one of the most timely and innovative programs for incarcerated adults who wish to make a
change in their lives. Simply stated, Productive Day integrates existing programs in the jail with new programs
including meaningful work so that each inmate has the opportunity to spend
eight hours a day productively engaged in education,
rehabilitation, recreation and labor. The program is designed to be entirely
self-supporting.
Inmates benefit from a Productive Day but they are not the only ones. As can be seen from the
program's goals, a Productive Day benefits the jail staff, the county, businesses
in the community, and the community as a whole.
Productive Day is a voluntary program, and it is applicable to all inmates confined at the Boulder County Jail.
As the name implies, Productive Day means having a positive attitude and being productive with one's time. An
innovative concept, Productive Day incorporates good work habits, academic achievement, coping skills, anger and
money management into one entity. During incarceration, inmates will be required to
earn their priviliges, work in some productive capacity and will have the
opportunity to take that skill into their private lives upon release from jail.
A cornerstone of Productive Day is officer involvement. We have committed and dedicated officers who make this
concept work. Full-time officers enforce strict codes of conduct, hygiene, and dress, and the use of an in-house
chain of command.
We have developed the program from what we have seen in other facilities
(none yet in Colorado). Media coverage of the many projects in which Productive Day members have been involved has
helped to generate extensive interest in the effort. A recent news piece was filmed by NBC affiliate KUSA TV (Ch.9)
and it ran on the next several newscasts.
