Jail Education Programs
Learning-to- Read Program (LTR) / Basic Literacy
- Instruction to improve reading and writing provided by volunteers from the public library
- Number of inmates involved annually is 15*
- Instructor helps each student determine his/her individual goals
English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Instruction in rudimentary English for all non-English inmates provided by student instructors from the
University of Colorado International English Center
- Number of inmates involved annually is 45*
- Instructor helps each student determine his/her individual goals
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
- Remedial instruction provided by the jail's Education Director for grades 1-8
- Number of inmates involved annually is 60*
- Students advance at least one grade level for every thirty (30) hours of instruction
GED Preparation & Testing
- Instruction provided by the jail's Education Director for grades 9-12
- Preparation for the GED exam
- Number of inmates involved annually 35*
- Students advance at least one grade level for every thirty (30) hours of instruction
College-Level Correspondence Courses
- Information provided by the jail's Education Director
- Number of inmates involved annually 10*
* these numbers represent only those inmates who have attended a minimum of ten (10) hours of classes, based on
data needs requested by the State Department of Education. Many more students begin classes, but drop out, are
released, or transported to other facilities.
