Under the philosophy of Productive Day in the Boulder County Jail, all new inmates must earn their inmate
privileges. Until classified to another module, new inmates will be housed in the intake module. The inmates will
be locked in their cells during the day without access to television, commissary, telephones, or visitation. The
jail staff will conduct a needs assessment in concert with the classification process for each inmate during this
two week period. Intake officers will meet individually or collectively with new inmates in order to assist them in
their transition to jail life.
If the inmate elects to enter the Productive Day program, he will be assigned to a module with appropriate
security where the inmate must work in some productive job and may choose to attend educational or life skills
classes. In the evening, the inmate may choose to watch TV, visit with a friend or loved one, or attend physical
recreation. Inmates who choose not to work will remain in the intake module locked in their cells during the day.
In all modules except the intake module, each inmate will have the ability to earn one contact visit every two
weeks if s/he remains free from all disciplinary action. All other visits will be secure visits. Recreation will be
offered but will be optional if the inmate wants to do one of the other two activities.
If an inmate violates a jail rule, s/he can be returned to the intake module and to losing earned good time.
Upon return, the inmate reverts to the same status as a new inmate until s/he sends a request to be reconsidered
for movement back into the Productive Day program and agrees to work and attend classes.
