We will need to have a written request for this information and have forms available at our office to fill out. Get a copy of our Request Form. View this form using Adobe Acrobat Reader software. If you are unable to come to our location, we can also accept requests which are mailed or faxed. You may use our form, or a letter of your own which includes a written statement saying the information will not be used for the solicitation of business for (monetary) pecuniary gain. Colorado law 24-72-305.5 requires us to obtain this signed statement prior to releasing reports. Our fax telephone number is (303) 441 - 4739. Please be aware if a request is faxed, we may not always be able to complete it right away.

All payments must be received in advance of releasing the requested records.

Information about Identity Theft

Our agency holds a variety of reports and records which are often requested. Some of the types of records and reports we have are:

Incarceration and Incident/Investigative Reports:

Our agency holds reports detailing incidents and crimes reported to our agency. We also hold jail records for any person who was transported and incarcerated in the Boulder County Jail. We will not have their investigative report which describes the arrest in more detail. You will need to contact the investigating agency directly for their investigative reports.

There is a $5.00 search fee for each searched report. The search fee includes up to 10 pages. Most reports fall within this range. If the report you are requesting is longer than 10 pages, each additional page will cost $.50. These fees are waived for anyone who is indexed in our report as a victim.

Arrest Photos:

If you wish to purchase an arrest photo (mugshot) of a person over the age of 18, there is a $5.00 fee. We cannot release arrest photos of juveniles unless that person has been charged as an adult. If this is the case, you will need to provide documentation from the Courts indicating such action.

Sex Offender Registration:

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office registers convicted sexual offenders who reside in the towns of Lyons and Superior and unincorporated Boulder County, in accordance with state law. Sexual offenders are required to register quarterly, or annually, depending on the crime for which they were convicted. A list of sexual offenders who are registered with the Sheriff's Office can be obtained by residents of Boulder County by going to the Sheriff's Office, Records Section, or one of the Sheriff's Office Substations and presenting proper identification. If you are not a resident in Boulder County, you can also receive a copy of the list. The list changes on a daily basis, as new offenders register and registered offenders move out of the area. Photographs, as well as a brief description of the convictions requiring registration, are also available for viewing.

The Sheriff's Office, Records Section, is located at the Criminal Justice Center, 1777 6th Street, Boulder, Colorado, 80302. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:30pm, the phone number is (303) 441 - 3600.

The substations are located at:

  • Lyons Town Hall
  • Superior Cherryvale Fire Station
  • Niwot in the Cottonwood Shopping Center.
  • Nederland Police Station

If you are a sexual offender living in Lyons, Superior, or unincorporated Boulder County and need to register, please call (303) 441 - 3611 and follow the instructions to set-up an appointment to register. You have five business days to get registered, once you become a resident.

Dispatch Tapes:

Dispatch Tapes may be requested directly from the Boulder Sheriff's Communications Center. For more information, they may be contacted at (303) 441 - 4444. There is a fee for this service.

Applicant Fingerprinting Information:

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office does applicant fingerprinting Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This is done by the Records Section personnel in the offices located in the Boulder County Criminal Justice Center building at 1777 6th Street in Boulder. This office is closed on holidays.

The fees for fingerprinting are $10.00 per card for persons who reside within Boulder County. Persons who do not live in Boulder County are charged $15.00 per card. Residency is determined by the address on the person’s drivers license. Other ways to prove residency include residential lease agreements or utility bills containing the person’s name.

Persons who wish to be fingerprinted should bring their fingerprint card(s) with them. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office will provide fingerprint cards for people being fingerprinted; however, applicants are encouraged to bring in a fingerprint card from the requesting agency as most fingerprint cards have specific information which may not be available or known to the Records personnel. DO NOT FILL OUT THE FINGERPRINT CARD. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office uses an automated system that will populate information to the card at the time of fingerprinting.

You will need to show some type of identification with a photograph prior to being fingerprinted. This is because our staff are required to confirm the person’s identity prior to fingerprinting. Acceptable forms of identification include driver’s licenses, state identification cards, passports or military identification cards.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office cannot fingerprint anyone for the purposes of immigration. The office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) requires the staff rolling the fingerprints to be registered with their office. Currently no members of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office are registered with the INS to perform this service.

There are no appointments necessary. Fingerprinting is done on a first come, first served basis. It takes approximately 15 minutes to be fingerprinted. We recommend you allow a few extra minutes in case someone is ahead of you.

There are many laws pertaining to the release of Criminal Justice Records. Most types of reports are open information, however, other reports are considered to have limited access. Limited access means only the people involved in the report may have access to unedited information. For example reports involving juvenile suspects may be released only to the persons involved in that report and the parents or legal guardians of the juvenile suspects. We also cannot release the identity of any sexual assault victims, regardless of their age, or persons who have reported cases of child abuse or neglect. Questions regarding release of specific types of reports can be answered at the time of your request.
