Boulder County Child Support Enforcement Unit
How do I
change the amount of my child support order?
The process
is a review and adjustment of your support order, otherwise known as a
modification .
Either party
may ask for a modification of their child support order and the request
must be made in writing. Your request should specify why
you are requesting a modification and detail how your
circumstances have changed.
Some reasons
to request a modification are:
-
One of the children has emancipated but your order is a
fixed amount for all children on your case.
-
You or the other parent has had a significant change in
income that may change your support order by 10 percent or more.
-
There has been a significant change in the cost of raising
the children on your case (such as healthcare costs, daycare costs or
extraordinary medical expenses).
The modification review
uses the current income of both parties and expenses for the children.
Your order amount may go up, go down or stay the same depending on the
circumstances of both parties. If your child support order was granted
from another state, the child support office generally will have to
request that state modify your support order. In most circumstances,
Colorado cannot modify another state’s orders directly; that process
may take quite some time depending on the other state’s process.
