N. 63rd Street: Niwot Road to Nelson
Road Widening and Reconstruction
Boulder County is in the process of reconstructing North 63rd
Street from Niwot Road to Nelson Road and from Monarch Road, south for
1/3 of a mile. The completed project will provide a continuous
road access with paved shoulders from the State Highway 119 (Diagonal
Highway) to Nelson Road.
The multi-year project was begun in 2007 and is scheduled to
continue into mid-2009. The bridge over Lefthand Creek will be
reconstructed as a separate project sometime before 2012.
Overall the project
includes four phases. Phase 1 included the replacement of
29 culverts and 1 irrigation siphon underneath the road. This
phase was started in late 2007 and continued through August 2008.
Boulder County began
Phase 2 in September 2008. This phase includes the widening
of side slopes and shoulders, and completed reconstruction of
approximately 2.5 miles of roadway with the addition of 4-foot
shoulders. The shoulders and overlay south of Monarch Road will be
completed in 2008 as weather permits.
Phase 3 will
complete the road widening between Niwot Road and Oxford Road in
the Spring of 2009. Final project will result in a more consistent
two-lane road with 4-foot paved shoulders on the entire extent.
Road closures to through traffic have been necessary and will continue
through project completion in order to expedite the work.
Phase 4 will
be the replacement of the N. 63rd
Street Bridge over Lefthand Creek. The bridge is currently in
design as a separate project. Bridge construction is awaiti8ng
federal funding and is scheduled for completion in the Winter of
2011/2012.
The road reconstruction project is being funded by the
Boulder County Transportation Sales Tax, passed by the Boulder County
voters in November 2001 and the sales tax extension passed by voters in
November 2007.
