On-street Bikeways

On-street bikeways and road shoulders are an integral
part of Boulder County’s transportation system. As a policy, the Boulder
County Transportation Department adds shoulders for bike use to all
roads receiving a pavement overlay if that road has historically
experienced significant bike use in the past.

How bikeways programs are funded
In addition to the approximately $3 million the Transportation
Department budgets each year for roadways, the improvement and addition
of on-street bikeways is made possible by taxes specifically approved by
the voters to specifically improve alternative modes.
Boulder County Transportation Improvement Tax
In the November 2001 election, the citizens of Boulder County
passed a 0.10% countywide transportation sales and use tax. This seven-year tax raises approximately $5 million
a year to be spent on countywide transportation improvements that
are needed to help reduce congestion, improve safety, and
increase the efficiency of alternative modes and traffic flows.
The Transportation Improvement Tax is helping to fund improvements on 66
miles of roadways in the County, including the addition of shoulders
appropriate for cycling along all roads included within the project
list. Please link to the
