The
Boulder County Commissioners honored County volunteers at the 2008 Volunteer
Grant Awards Ceremony and Reception on May 1. The event serves as a “thank-you”
to individuals who volunteer with County programs and specifically recognizes
volunteers who submitted winning proposals for grant funding to benefit Boulder
County volunteer programs.
A five-member selection
committee awarded a total of $3,810 to fund nine grant proposals submitted by 11
volunteers.
Three of the grant awards will fund volunteer programs in Community Services.
Long-Term Care Ombudsman volunteer Miriam Field and Project Visibility volunteer
George Mrazak’s each submitted a proposal that will fund volunteer training fees
and materials for their respective volunteer programs. Boulder County Juvenile
Center volunteer Barbara Byrnes-Lenarcic’s winning proposal will help provide
art books for detained youth.
Parks & Open Space received $1,000 in funding for two volunteer grant
proposals. Keegan Hennis, a 4-H Program volunteer, earned funding to purchase
LEGO Technics kits to inspire kids’ creativity in the program’s new robotics
project. Master Food Safety Advisory volunteer Stephanie Estreen’s awarded
grant will provide books and supplies for the county’s food safety volunteers.
Student volunteers and interns also submitted winning proposals. Funds for a
proposal submitted by University of Colorado freshman Maria Mendez will provide
software and educational games for the Housing Department’s Casa de la Esperanza
to help children develop their math skills.
Two grant proposals totaling $860 will benefit Public Health’s Addiction
Recovery Center thanks to volunteer interns Kenneth (K.C.) Cline and Teri
Dillion. Their proposals will fund field trips, group classes and supplies for
the Center’s adolescent program and will also cover Denver Odyssey training
registration fees for the Center’s volunteer interns.
Three volunteers from the Boulder County Public Health Medical Reserve Corp
advisory board – Catherine Horner-Sluiter, Janet Sanchez and Walter Boner, Jr. –
collaborated on a proposal that received $500 to purchase 42 hand-crank radios
for emergency response volunteers’ “ready” kits.
County Commissioners passed a new resolution on April 10 declaring National
Volunteer Week in Boulder County from April 27 – May 3. More than 5,500
volunteers donated a total of more than 170,000 hours of service to Boulder
County programs in 2007.
