CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Children, Youth, Women & Family Services

Be A Head Start Volunteer

Head Start is a comprehensive preschool for low-income families.  Classroom Assistant Volunteers work in the classroom helping teachers and supporting daily activities.  School hours are 8-4 and volunteers can choose the amount of time and the location (Lafayette or Boulder) that best works for them.

Also needed are Childcare Volunteers to help with childcare for weekday afternoon and evening meetings.  To register or for more information, call Brenda - 303-554-1013.

Career Closet Volunteer

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) is a program designed to help low-income families gain education and job skills in order to improve their family’s financial situation and move towards self-sufficiency.  One of the services that FSS provides to participants is access to a career closet, which contains community donated professional/dress casual clothing.  We are looking for a volunteer to help manage the career closet in Boulder. The volunteer for the FSS career closet would be responsible for checking the donation phone line, setting up times for donations to be dropped off, going through donations and sorting the clothing, taking unwanted clothing to the Salvation Army and keeping the career closet organized. Volunteer hours (weekdays only) are flexible.  For more information, contact Ann Harris, (303) 441-4853, aharris@bouldercounty.org

Mentoring and Tutoring Program in Social Services

You can make a great difference in the lives of our county's youth, ages 4 through 17, living at home or in foster care, who want someone supportive involved in their lives.  Mentors spend up to 2 hours per week participating in a wide variety of activities with children in need.  Tutors give 2 hours a week helping children with their school subjects.  Mentors commit to stay friends with their matches for 6 months; tutors commit for 3 months.  Join a team of enthusiastic volunteers with this Department of Social Services program!  For more information, call Donna McCraith or Thomi Quackenbush , 303-441-1053, or email  them at socialservicesvolunteer@bouldercounty.org.

Give a Grandparent a Break!

For a child facing out-of-home placement, going to a known and beloved grandparent is a great comfort, but those grandparents face many challenges.  Raising children as a senior is difficult, especially when the children have been removed from their parent's custody. YOU can help sustain children in the home.

The Boulder County Department of Social Services needs volunteers to provide respite time and support for the grandparents and  recreational activities for their children.  Contact Thomi Quackenbush at 303-441-1053 or socialservicesvolunteer@bouldercounty.org

Be a  Child Friend/Facilitator in Nurturing Program!

The Nurturing Program is a parenting class for families in the Child Protection system.  You can be a person who helps with the children's portion. You will engage the children in positive activities paralleling the Parents' portion of the program.

Training and support is provided. The Nurturing Program is highly successful and  a most satisfying form of intervention for all concerned.  You will gain experience in a group setting and a working knowledge of parent/child dynamics.  This is a 14-week commitment, one evening a week.  For more information, contact Thomi Quackenbush or Donna McCraith at 303 441-1053 or e-mail them at socialservicesvolunteer@bouldercounty.org

Tutor/Mentor at Casa de la Esperanza Academic Center

Casa de la Esperanza, a family farm worker site in South Longmont, has volunteer openings for people who can come a couple hours a week to assist young students with homework.  This dynamic after-school program just may be a good fit for you!  Computer lab is open for after- school hours.  Volunteers are welcomed for whatever time you can give between 3 and 8 pm.  Looking especially for people with compute competencies.  Need not speak Spanish, but that is also helpful in this program.  Contact Carlota Loya Hernández at cloya@bouldercounty.org or call her at 303-678-6220

Give a Kid a Lift!

Do you like to drive and build a relationship at the same time?  Kids in out-of-home-placement (and their foster parents) need help with transportation.  Getting to and from court ordered visitation, therapeutic and medical appointments and school events is often a strain on kids, foster families and their caseworkers.  This is a great way to ease into a mentoring relationship and a time when these kids need a caring adult and a sympathetic ear.   For more information, contact Thomi Quackenbush or Donna McCraith at 303- 441-1053 or e-mail them at socialservicesvolunteer@bouldercounty.org
