Become a Small Acreage Management
(SAM) Volunteer
Colorado State University Extension in Boulder County is excited to
offer this volunteer opportunity again in 2009 for Boulder County
residents interested in the nuts and bolts of managing common issues
associated with small acreage properties. Most client contacts will
be through messages from clients left in a voice mailbox but
volunteers may also choose to identify “weeds” for clients and other
volunteer opportunities. Boulder County has more than 5,000
properties from 1- 100 acres totaling over 37,000 acres. Many of
these landowners are unfamiliar with land management issues beyond
those found in the suburban backyard settings.
The Boulder County Extension SAM Volunteer program is open to anyone
18 years old or older. Applicants are selected through a screening
and interview process. Previous experience in small acreage issues
is desired, but not required.
Volunteers receive approximately 24 hours of small acreage training
from experienced and knowledgeable instructors. Topics include:
pasture/grazing management, weed ID and control, and fire
mitigation. Classes for 2009 are scheduled Tuesdays in February:
3, 10, 17 and 24, 2009. Training takes place at the Boulder County
fairgrounds from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.
The cost for the training is $95 which includes an extensive
resource notebook, lunch and instruction from experienced teachers
($60) and a copy of “Weeds of the West” 9th Ed. ($35, if you already
have a copy then only training fee is required). Arrangements can
be made for two payments.
In return for the training, volunteers are required to return at
least 24 hours of time during the calendar year assisting the small
acreage management program through answering clients questions,
identifying weeds and other projects.
Applications must be received by Monday, January 19, 2009 for full
consideration.
