Information for Displaced Voters

Information for Voters Displaced by the Marshall Fire

Our job at Boulder County Elections is to make sure your mail ballot finds you. However, for security purposes, mail ballots cannot be forwarded. Thus, depending on your circumstance, please follow these simple steps to ensure you receive your mail ballot for any upcoming elections. Ballot content is dependent on where you are registered to vote (residential address). This guidance is a step by step guide elaborating on the information provided on the Secretary of State’s website page for displaced voters.

  • Note: If you put in a permanent change of address with the post office, you may have inadvertently changed your residential address for voting. Do not fret. No need to update again with the post office, if you intent to rebuild/return to your pre-fire address simply edit your registration following the directions below with your pre-fire residential home address and provide an alterative mailing address to receive your ballot.

Displaced from your home but intend to return (regardless of timeline):

  • Visit GoVoteColorado.gov, find your current registration, and you may edit your record updating your mailing address (not residential) on your voter registration.
    • Note: When updating your registration, most voters do not need to fill in the “mail my ballot to a different address.” This field is used in unique circumstances for those that need to provide an alternative mailing address to a third location to receive their ballot.
  • This should be to the address at which you are currently receiving mail / having your mail forwarded to. Remember, by law, ballots cannot be forwarded.

Displaced and have decided you WILL NOT be returning to your former residential address:

  • If you have already decided you will not be returning to your former residential address ever (not rebuilding and/or returning to a rental) and you have established a new permanent residence, you should update your voter registration residential address. This is the same if you had normally moved.
  • Visit GoVoteColorado.gov, find your current registration, and edit your record updating your residential address on your voter registration.

Please note that registration changes are not immediate, but reviewed by county personnel before going live in the GoVoteColorado.gov system. Please allow up to several business days for the change to take effect in your voter registration record.

The above steps can also be completed in person at our office during normal business hours or by mail using a voter registration form.
