Boulder County has first approved syringe exchange program in state

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

On May 9, 2011, the Boulder County Board of Health passed a resolution approving the Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) syringe exchange program - making the program the first approved syringe exchange program in Colorado. In 2010, Colorado lawmakers created an exemption in Colorado’s drug paraphernalia law allowing counties to adopt syringe exchange programs through a local approval process. Continued

Syringe Exchange Programs Are Now Legal in Colorado

A nationwide ban on the use of federal funds for syringe exchange programs (SEPs) that was implemented in 1988 was lifted at the end of 2009. Legislation has passed in Colorado that creates the opportunity for local public health agencies to operate SEPs and amends the paraphernalia laws that previously impeded such programs.

People Aged 50+ at Risk for HIV

Conference Emphasizes Need for More Screening

Studies presented at the 2008 National STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Prevention Conference in early March indicate a need for more screening for STDs, particularly in youth, young adults, and in men who have sex with men (MSM).

CDC Revises HIV/AIDS Testing Recommendations

Of the estimated 1 to 1.2 million persons living with HIV in the United States, it is estimated that one quarter of them are unaware of their infection. Estimated transmission is 3.5 times higher among persons who are unaware of their infection than among persons who are aware of their infection, which contributes disproportionately to the number of new HIV infections each year in the United States. Studies have shown that the majority of persons who are aware of their HIV infections substantially reduce sexual behaviors that might transmit HIV after they become aware they are infected.
