Position Title:INTERN: Non-Acute Care Facility Emergency Planning Intern

Program Summary:
Major Objective
Non-acute care facilities (nursing homes and assisted living facilities) have a great responsibility to be able to respond in emergencies and safely evacuate a population that poses significant challenges under difficult conditions with limited resources. An excellent, well-rehearsed plan is a must. Unfortunately day-to-day operational demands on staffing and other resources have left many facilities unprepared. This internship will assist facilities to bring emergency and evacuation plans up to date and map out a route for implementation of a training and exercise plan.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review histories of facilities that recently participated in evacuations or pre-evacuations and interview staff to obtain a more complete picture as necessary.
  • Accompany AAA staff and assess facilities’ level of emergency and evacuation planning.
  • Identify facilities that would benefit most from our assistance and secure their participation.
  • Help create simple boilerplate for plans development from existing resources.
  • Compile a list of resources that might be useful, including associated contact information.
  • Encourage participation in Boulder County’s healthcare coalition and attend these monthly meetings.
  • Coordinate with the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.
Qualifications and Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and integrate information gathered from multiple sources
  • A basic understanding of the National Recovery Framework and emergency planning
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training to at least the ICS 100 & IS 700 level preferred

Special Requirements

  • Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation. Some immunizations and/or TB tests may be required (at the expense of BCPH), and volunteer/intern must comply with these requirements prior to start date.

Training Dates and Information:

Training and Orientation

  • Background briefing on non-acute care facilities’ emergency planning.
  • Overview of AAA Ombudsman Program.
  • Introduction to facility staff.
  • Universal precautions and TB training will be provided by the BCPH employee infection control nurse before the volunteer/intern can begin.
  • Volunteers will be required to view BCPH new employee videos online or on DVD.
Additional Information:

Supervision
Position will be supervised by the Boulder County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.
