Position Title:Nutrition Environment Measurement Survey (NEMS) / Food Access Volunteer

Time Commitment or Project Date:5-10 hours per week through July 2013. Volunteer must be able to commit to surveying 2-4 restaurants or grocery stores per week.

Program Summary:
The goal of this volunteer opportunity is to assist Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) with an analysis of the food environment in Boulder County.  The project will consist of an extensive study of over 40 restaurants and grocery stores to assess the quality and accessibility of food in Boulder County.  BCPH will use this information to inform health planners of the need for significant changes in the consumer nutrition environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Complete the Nutrition Environment Measurement Survey (NEMS) training program and read the supplemental training materials.
  • Gain an understanding of the consumer nutrition environment in Boulder County by analyzing the price, accessibility, quality, and location of food choices.
  • Using the NEMS training templates, conduct site inspections of the selected restaurant and grocery store sites; sites will be determined by BCPH staff.
  • Submit the completed restaurant and grocery stores analyses to the project supervisor.
  • Attend meetings with BCPH and NEMS staff to assess the results of the site visits.
Qualifications and Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to clearly articulate and communicate.
  • Comfort in engaging with business owners and staff.
  • Attention to detail (must be a clear and thorough note-taker).
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to promptly provide project supervisor with the completed analysis of each restaurant and grocery store site visit.

Special Requirements 

  • Familiarity with Boulder County neighborhoods and business districts.
  • Familiarity with local health system and the consumer food environment.
  • Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation.  Some immunizations and/or TB tests may be required (at the expense of BCPH), and volunteer/intern must comply with these requirements prior to start date.

Training Dates and Information:
  • Universal precautions and TB training will be provided by the BCPH infection control nurse before the volunteer/intern can begin.
  • Volunteer will be required to view BCPH new employee videos online or on DVD.
  • Volunteer will be required to complete the 20-hour Nutrition Environment Measurement Survey training.
  • Volunteer will accompany the project supervisor on a site inspection simulation prior to conducting survey restaurants and grocery stores alone.
