Boulder County Sheriff’s Office honors retiring undersheriff for 43 years of service

Celebrates the promotion of four employees

Boulder County, Colo. - On Friday, April 22, the Boulder County Sherriff’s Office is honoring Tom Shomaker, Undersheriff, for 43 years of service to the community. In addition, a celebration is being held for four employees, who will be promoted in rank.

Tom Shomaker was hired by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office in January 1973. Since then, he has held numerous positions within the Sheriff’s Office, including: patrol officer, investigator, sergeant, lieutenant and division chief. He has served in his current role of Undersheriff since 2003.

Tom was one of the original SWAT, originally known as STAR, team members. Tom served with SWAT for 16 years, including serving in the role of tactical team supervisor and commander. He planned, coordinated and supervised several high profile protection events including visits by the Queen of England, Salmon Rushdi and Pope John Paul II.

While a detective lieutenant, Tom worked to form the Victim Services Unit. The unit has grown to three full time staff members who oversee 55 volunteers that provide assistance and advocacy to victims and witness of serious crime and trauma.

Tom has received numerous awards and commendations over his career including the Medal of Valor for his role in stopping a serial killer. Other awards have included the Meritorious Service Medal and the Distinguished Service Award.

As Undersheriff, Tom managed all of the functions that crossed divisional lines which included finance and budget, personnel and policy, and had over-all department needs and goals in mind.

Tom Shomaker has served the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Boulder County community with dedication and distinction for 43 years.

Tommy Sloan joined the department as a patrol deputy in 1988. Tommy was the sergeant for the Town of Lyons. Tommy served with the SWAT team and the Bomb Squad. Tommy has been the incident commander for many large scale incidents over the years. Tommy filled the role of the Operations Division Chief beginning in June 2013. Tommy Sloan will serve in the capacity of the Undersheriff for the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Heidi Prentup’s interest in a public safety career began with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Explorer post. In 1989, she joined the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy. During her 27 years of service with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Heidi has served as a patrol deputy, field training officer, detective, sergeant and commander. She also served a SWAT hostage negotiator. She will be the first female division chief at the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Kevin Parker joined the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office in 1994. Kevin served on the SWAT team, as a defensive tactics instructor and was a member of the Boulder County Investigative Team. Kevin also worked as the Town of Lyons sergeant for five years. Kevin is being promoted to the rank of commander.

Sam Hard joined the Sheriff’s Office as a corrections deputy in 1998. In 2000, Sam transferred to the Operations Division where he has served for the last 16 years. In addition to his regular patrol duties, Sam is a Field Training Officer, a member of the SWAT team and an assistant advisor for our Explorer Post. Sam is being promoted to the rank of sergeant.
