Deceased camper’s body discovered near the Sourdough Trailhead
A man's body was found in a tent south of the parking lot at the Sourdough Trailhead near Rainbow Lakes.
Boulder County, Colo. - This afternoon, just before 12:30 p.m., a man's body was found by a passing hiker near the Sourdough Trailhead. The hiker was walking her dogs in the woods south of the main parking lot when her dogs began barking at a tent near the trail, pulling her toward it. As the hiker walked closer to the one-person tent she observed a body covered in flies inside. After being unable to verbally rouse the person inside the hiker returned to a location with cell service and dialed 9-1-1.
Deputies responded to the trailhead located in the 300 block of County Road 116 near Rainbow Lakes and confirmed the individual was deceased. The body appears to be a man in his 40's whose identity is unknown. The man had set up a small camp in the woods, approximately 40 yards south of the main parking lot. Investigators from the sheriff's office and the Boulder County Coroner's Office believe the man had likely been deceased for several days. The initial scene investigation did not suggest foul play or other suspicious circumstances.
Investigators from the sheriff's office will continue to investigate the man's death in conjunction with the Boulder County Coroner's Office. The coroner's office will work to identify the decedent and determine the cause and manner of his death. The man's body does not match the description of any individuals reported locally as missing.
The case number associated with the investigation is 16-4154.
