Hikers Rescued

Hikers Lost in the Dark

Boulder County, Colo. - On January 5, 2016, at approximately 5:42pm, deputies with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office responded to 9 Kneale Road (which is the location of Eldorado Canyon State Park), in unincorporated Boulder County, to assist in locating three lost hikers. The hikers (although dressed for the weather), did not bring any head lamps or flashlights with them, and therefore could not find their way down the hiking trail they were on, in the dark. Rocky Mountain Fire Authority and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group also responded to the area to search for the hikers.

The rescuers were able to make contact with the lost hikers by cell phone. The three hikers stated that they were “ok” but temperatures were starting to drop. Based upon the information received from the hikers, rescuers from the all-volunteer Rocky Mountain Rescue Group were able to physically contact the hikers at 7:47pm. All three hikers were fine, and were able to descend the mountain on foot, guided down by rescuers.

At 10:12pm the rescuers and lost hikers arrived safely at the parking area. The three lost hikers were identified as Desire Cadena (19) from El Paso, Texas, Matthew Perry (22) from El Paso, Texas, and Jose Moreno (21), from Broomfield, Colorado.

The case report number for this incident is 16-100.
