Injured climber rescued on Second Flatiron Trail

Boulder County, Colo. - On August 22, 2021, at approximately 6:08 p.m., the Boulder County Communications received a call for an injured climber on the Second Flatiron Trail.

The 53-year-old female was climbing the Freeway route on the Second Flatiron and attempted the Leap of Faith move, landing awkwardly and sustaining an injury to her ankle. She and her climbing partner were able to get down to the 1st /2nd Flatiron Trail and make it part way down before she was unable to tolerate further movement. As a result of her injury she was unable to walk out to the trailhead.

Rangers from City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks and rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group responded to the incident and provided initial medical care, including splinting the injured extremity. Initially rescuers attempted to assist the injured climber down the trail with a splint on her leg however she was unable to tolerate weight-bearing. The injured climber was loaded into a litter and a technical evaluation was conducted to bring her out to the trailhead. The injured climber refused additional medical care and was transported from the scene in a private vehicle by her climbing partner.

Agencies assisting with the rescue included Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks.
