Injured hiker rescued at Chautauqua Open Space in Boulder County, Colorado

66 year old male hiker rescued between 1st and 2nd Flatiron

Boulder County, Colo. -

On Thursday December 23, 2021 at approximately 4:18 p.m., Boulder County Communications received a report of an injured hiker on the trail between the First and Second Flatiron at the Chautauqua Open Space, just west of Boulder.

The 66-year-old male was hiking down the trail, after reaching the top, when he slipped and fell injuring his ankle. As a result of the injury and the resulting pain, he was unable to walk out to the trailhead.

Rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group along with Rangers from the City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks hiked in and were able to locate the injured party. Rescuers provided medical care and determined that a litter evacuation would be necessary. Rocky Mountain Rescue Group packaged the injured party into a beanbag splint and litter and conducted a technical evacuation of the injured hiker out to the trailhead. The injured hiker was evaluated by paramedics from American Medical Response and transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for further medical evaluation.

Agencies assisting with this rescue effort included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks Rangers, and American Medical Response.
