Boulder County, Colo. -- On Monday, July 20th, 2015, at approximately 1:15pm, Boulder County Communications received a 9-1-1 call from an injured hiker in Fern Canyon in south Boulder. Trisha Montgomery, a 40-year-old resident of Lafayette, injured her left ankle while hiking the Fern Canyon trail, just above the "rock steps," which is estimated to be four to five miles from the trailhead entrance. The trailhead entrance is located at 1245 Wildwood Road in Boulder County.
Members of the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Boulder Mountain Parks & Open Space, and the Boulder Fire Department responded with deputies from the Sheriff's Office to assist Ms. Montgomery off the trail. Given the terrain and location from the trailhead, Ms. Montgomery was evacuated down the trail using a wheeled litter. Once at the trailhead entrance, deputies provided Ms. Montgomery and her companions a ride to their vehicle, whereafter treatment for the ankle injury was sought at a local medical facility. The entire rescue operation lasted approximately three hours.
