Deputy Brunkow being honored for saving the lives of two people who were taken hostage

Boulder County, Colo. - We are pleased to announce that Deputy Jeff Brunkow was nominated for and will be receiving the Officer of the Month Award from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. An award ceremony will be held by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and representatives of the Memorial Fund will be on hand from Washington, D.C., to present Deputy Brunkow with the award.

Since 1996, the Memorial Fund has honored a deserving officer (or set of officers) each month at the local, state or federal level—men and women who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

What: Ceremony honoring Deputy Brunkow as the Officer of the Month from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund
When: Tuesday, February 16, 6 p.m.
Where: Training Room, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, 5600 Flatiron Parkway, Boulder

In addition to being presented with an award from the Memorial Fund, Deputy Brunkow will be honored at a special awards reception May 2017 in Washington, D.C., during National Police Week. A story about Deputy Brunkow will also be published in their magazine.

On April 22, 2015, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a hostage situation near Eldorado Springs at the Doudy Draw Trailhead parking lot. They encountered a young man who had taken two of his in-laws hostage at gunpoint, threatening to kill them. Deputy Brunkow saw the suspect put a revolver up to the back of a victim’s head and he ended the stand-off by firing a single shot from 120 feet away, through a four inch opening of the car door, striking and killing the suspect. He is being honored for saving the lives of the two hostages.

Space is expected to be limited, so we encourage members of the media to utilize pool cameras, if possible.
