Niwot High School teacher arrested for assaulting a student
Dylan Hollingsworth was arrested this morning for felony assault on a student over an in-class altercation that occurred last week
Niwot, Colo. - This morning a teacher at Niwot High School, Dylan Thomas Hollingsworth, 43, of Longmont, was arrested for an assault on a student that occurred last week.
On Thursday, October 27, a school resource officer learned of an assault that occurred during a weightlifting class at Niwot High School the prior day. Upon learning of the alleged assault, the teacher was placed on administrative leave by the school district while a joint investigation into the purported assault ensued.
Through the investigation it was determined that the altercation Hollingsworth had with a 17-year-old student stemmed from the student's use of profanity in class, which the class had been warned about earlier in the class period. Hollingsworth reportedly told the class that the next person who used profanity would get into some sort of trouble, and might possibly be hit or kicked.
Shortly after Hollingsworth warned the students against using profanity in class, a student continued to use profanity while singing along with a song while working out. Hollingsworth reportedly approached the student, and using his middle and ring finger, he began to apply pressure to the student's larynx, causing the student to struggle to breathe. The teacher then kneed the student in the groin, causing the student to fall to the ground. Over 25 other students were in the class at the time of the assault.
The sheriff's investigation culminated in Hollingsworth's arrest this morning when he turned himself into the Boulder County Jail. Hollingsworth was booked into the jail on the charges of second degree assault, a class four felony; and third degree assault, a class one misdemeanor. Hollingsworth was released on bond and is due to return to court on December 8, at 1:30 p.m.
The arrest charges are only allegations against Hollingsworth and he maintains the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. A copy of Hollingworth's booking photo is attached below.
The case number associated with this investigation is 16-6659.
