Overnight pursuit ends in vehicle crash in east Boulder

A vehicle briefly fled from a deputy on 55th Street before crashing

Boulder, Colo. - Just after midnight this morning, a sheriff's deputy noticed a car parked at the entrance of the San Lazaro Community in the 5,500 block of Valmont Road with a man urinating next to it. The deputy stopped to speak with the man, but the man immediately got into the car and started the engine. The front seat passenger in the vehicle made a furtive movement, which caused the deputy to believe he had a firearm. The deputy issued more commands, which were ignored, and the vehicle subsequently fled.

The gray colored mid-2000s Volkswagen Jetta drove away from the intersection southbound on 55th Street at a high rate of speed. The deputy pursued the vehicle a short distance until it crashed at Arapahoe Road and 55th Street. Other deputies and officers from the Boulder Police Department responded to assist the pursuing deputy. The occupants of the vehicle refused to come out of the crashed vehicle.

Because of the concern that at least one occupant may be armed, the BearCat armored rescue vehicle was utilized to approach the suspects' vehicle. Both occupants were taken into custody without incident. The occupants were identified as Jonathon Hernandez-Cervantez and Anthony Garcia-Castilleja, both 18 and from Boulder.

The driver, Hernandez-Cervantez, was medically cleared on scene was then taken to the Boulder County Jail where he was booked and lodged on the charges of vehicular eluding, a class four felony; DUI and reckless driving; both misdemeanors; and possession of an open alcoholic beverage, a traffic infraction. The passenger, Garcia-Castilleja, was transported to an area hospital for evaluation of pre-existing injuries and was later released.

The investigation into the incident and what caused the men to flee from the deputy continues.

The case report number associated with this investigation is 16-6999.
