Overnight wildland grass fire north of Boulder
A wind-driven, quick-moving wildland grassfire north of Boulder has been contained and is being mopped up
Boulder County, Colo. - At 11:10 pm Christmas night, Boulder County Communications began receiving 911 calls about a wildland grassfire near the area of N. Foothills Highway (US36) and Lefthand Canyon Drive north of Boulder. Responding personnel discovered a quick-moving, wind-driven, rapidly-expanding fire east of that intersection near Sage Valley Road.
As firefighters worked to try and contain the rapidly expanding fire, sheriff's deputies began contacting residents in the area by going door-to-door to alert them of the fire. Deputies attempted to contact a total of 22 residences in the area; 7 homes chose to voluntarily evacuate, while several others chose to begin preparing to evacuate but remained and monitored the ongoing condition of the fire. Deputies prepared an emergency notification phone message for homes in the area in the event an urgent and mandatory evacuation order needed to be given quickly.
A sudden break in the wind conditions just after midnight allowed firefighters to gain the upper hand on the fire and quell its rapid spread. The fire has been completely contained, and as of 12:45 a.m., firefighters began to mop up the remnants of the fire.
The exact size of the fire footprint is still being determined, but it is estimated the fire was approximately 6 acres. The initial information received by dispatchers was that the fire started as the result of some type of electrical issue in the area. No property or structures were damaged by the fire.
The fire response was managed by the Lefthand Fire Protection District. They were assisted by fire personnel from the Lyons, Hygiene, Boulder Rural, and Boulder Mountain fire protection districts, the Boulder Emergency Squad, and the sheriff's on-call fire duty officer.
The case number related to this incident is 16-7832.
