Rescue of Two Backcountry Skiers Near Caribou Townsite

Boulder County, Colo. - On Wednesday, 13 January 2016 at approximately 8:30pm personnel from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Nederland Fire Department, Nederland Police Department, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and Front Range Rescue Dogs responded to the area above the Old Caribou Townsite in unincorporated Boulder County, on the report of two missing parties who had been backcountry skiing in the area. The two missing parties were identified as Jason Douglass of Superior, CO and Mathew Smith of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Upon arrival, a Nederland Police Officer located the vehicle of Mr. Douglass near Forest Service Rd 505. Search teams entered the field and both parties were found shortly after midnight. Both parties were uninjured and safely transported back to the trailhead.

Both parties were experienced backcountry skiers and were prepared to spend the night outdoors. They both had extra layers, food and water, and fire starting equipment. The two men said they got confused on where exactly they were late in the afternoon and then it started to get dark. They decided to remain in one location and they prepared to settle in for the night. The search team was able to locate the two men by using information Mr. Douglass was sending to his wife via cell phone.
