Search Ends for a Lost Cross-Country Skier in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area
Rescue personnel have located a missing 22-year-old cross-country skier near Camp Dick in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.
Allenspark, Colo. - At approximately 3:20 p.m. this afternoon, the Boulder County Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from Dmigry Gershuny, 52, who had been cross-country skiing with his son, Yuri Gershuny, 22, in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area near Camp Dick, in the 50,000 block of the Peak-to-Peak Highway south of Allenspark. Dmigry and Yuri, both from Longmont, had been cross-country skiing together throughout the day and were returning to their vehicle when they became separated at approximately 1:20 p.m. Dmigry searched the trail along the Middle Saint Vrain Creek that he and Yuri had skied together, but after unsuccessfully trying to locate him, Dmigry dialed 9-1-1.
Deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office responded to the area, along with members of the Indian Peaks Fire Protection District, Allenspark Fire Protection District, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and Front Range Rescue Dogs. A search of the area Yuri was last seen in was launched, with rescue personnel fielding a total of five search teams. Yuri had skied the general area prior to today, but was not prepared to be in the wilderness for an extended period of time, including overnight.
At approximately 7:35 p.m., one of the search teams located Yuri west of Camp Dick. Yuri was very cold, but uninjured, and reported that he had gotten lost trying to return to the trailhead. Yuri was evacuated from the trail by snowmobile and was evaluated by medical personnel at the Camp Dick trailhead.
The case number associated with this search and rescue operation is 15-7360.
