Suspect in officer-involved shooting dies

The suspect who engaged Deputy Teri Javes in a gunfight on Highway 287 eight days ago died early this morning.

Boulder County, Colo. - The sheriff's office was notified this morning that Adrian Joseph Shaffer, 37, of Boulder, the previously identified suspect injured in an officer-involved shooting, died overnight at a Denver metro-area hospital. Shaffer had been receiving on-going medical treatment for injuries he sustained after he engaged Deputy Teri Javes in a gunfight on Highway 287 south of Longmont on Saturday, September 10.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office will determine the cause and manner of Shaffer's death. The investigation into the attempted murder of Deputy Javes by Shaffer, and the resulting officer-involved shooting, remain under investigation by the Boulder County Investigation Team. After the team's investigation has been completed, their findings will be presented to the District Attorney of the Twentieth Judicial District, Stan Garnett, and Sheriff Joe Pelle. It is expected the presentation of findings will occur before the end of the month.
