The Hero’s Journey of the Caregiver workshop begins in February
Saturday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 11, in Longmont
Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder
County Area Agency on Aging, a Division of Community Services, is offering a new two-part
workshop for family caregivers of older adults. The Hero’s Journey of the Caregiver helps participants look at their
experiences of being the hero as a caregiver, and promises to leave
them with new insight, inspiration, and renewal.
Hero’s Journey of the Caregiver
When: Saturday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 11;
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
(light breakfast starting at 8:30 a.m.)
Where: Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak
The Hero’s Journey of the Caregiver
is inspired by the work of Joseph Campbell, mythologist, researcher, and author,
and uses a multimedia approach (film clips, art, poetry, self-reflection, and
discussion) to walk family caregivers through the stages of their heroic
journeys of caregiving. It is created
and taught by JoAnn Dorio Burton, who is a caregiver for her elderly mother, as
well as an author, consultant, trainer, and Community Programs Coordinator for
Windhorse Community Services.
The workshop is open to
Boulder County residents providing local or long-distance care for a relative,
partner or friend who is 60 or over, or of any age if the person has
dementia. The workshop is free to attend, though a donation of $25 is
suggested. Financial assistance for
respite care (substitute elder care during class periods) is available.
