Two men flee stolen vehicle after crashing in North Boulder; both men captured after three hour search

The driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to elude deputies near 28th / Broadway before crashing

Boulder, Colo. - Just before 8:20 p.m. on Monday, January 23, a sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding near the area of 28th and Violet in North Boulder. When the deputy activated his emergency lights the vehicle began to slow as if it were looking for a place to pull over, but continued to travel northbound on 28th Street.

As the vehicle passed Yarmouth it accelerated rapidly in an attempt to elude the deputy. The deputy did not pursue the vehicle and shut his emergency equipment off when it was apparent the vehicle was trying to flee. The vehicle continued northbound but slowed slightly as it attempted to make a left turn onto Broadway. The vehicle failed to negotiate the corner and struck a post in the center median just north of the intersection.

After the vehicle, a 1997 green Honda Accord, struck the post it became disabled and the two occupants fled on foot into the field northwest of the intersection. It was quickly determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Aurora on January 15.

Multiple deputies and officers from the sheriff's office and the Boulder Police Department converged in the area and established a perimeter in an attempt to locate the two men who fled. The deputy the men fled from believed that at least one of the men may have been armed at the time.

A search of the area was commenced using a number of resources, including sheriff's K9s, thermal imaging cameras, and 22 members of the sheriff's SWAT Team. An Everbridge emergency notification message was sent to the residents of the Dakota Ridge Neighborhood asking them to secure their homes and to be aware of the heavy police presence. In all, 35 deputies and officers participated in the search and apprehension effort.

At 11:20 p.m. a search team, including a sheriff's K9, located two men hiding in a vestibule of a townhome building in the 1000 block of Laramie Boulevard. The men, Kaylob Lee Marrs, 21, and David Gerardo Fuentes-Fuentes, 19, both from Boulder, were identified by the initial deputy as the men who fled the stolen vehicle. The men were subsequently arrested and transported to the Boulder County Jail. Deputies are continuing to investigate the incident, and are working to determine the specific arrest charges each man will face.

No one was injured in this incident and the stolen vehicle suffered moderate damage.

The case number associated with this investigation is 17-442.
