UPDATE: Man found unconscious by transport deputies dies

The 23-year-old man died Saturday evening at a Denver hospital

Boulder, Colo. - Late yesterday evening, the sheriff's office was notified that Demetrius Shankling, 23, had died at a local Denver area hospital. Mr. Shankling had previously been found unconscious by deputies who were transporting him to a Boulder detoxification center in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 9. Deputies and medical personnel were able to revive him on the scene, and he was transported to the hospital unconscious and in critical condition.

Sheriff Pelle previously requested the Boulder County Investigation Team (BCIT), a team of multi-jurisdictional investigators led by the Longmont Police Department, conduct the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the transport of Mr. Shankling. The BCIT investigation remains active and on-going, and Sheriff Pelle has not yet received their investigative findings.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office will be conducting an autopsy and is responsible to determine the cause and manner of Mr. Shankling's death and will work with the BCIT investigators as they conduct their investigation. Any additional information regarding the death of Mr. Shankling will be released by their office as it becomes available.

The case number associated with this investigation is 18-5352.
