Three teens lost on fishing trip found
safe, due to their preparation
Boulder County, Colo.--
teens who failed to return at the appointed time from fishing have been located safe along
Rock Creek, east of Allenspark, CO.
boys, a 17 year-old from Padroni, CO, a 17 year-old from Sidney, NE, and a
15-year-old from Peetz, CO, were attending a leadership retreat with 35
year-old Michael Forester, of Iliff, CO when they went missing. At approximately 6:30 p.m. on August
11, the boys hiked up the hill from the private cabin they were staying to fish
in a local pond. When they found the fishing in the pond was not good, they
decided to hike down to Rock Creek. They fished for a little while and when
they started back discovered the path back was too steep to traverse in
the diminishing light of the early evening.
The boys did
everything right to get rescued! They made the decision to remain where they
were (one of the tips from experts when lost in the backcountry). The teens
were well prepared to spend the night in the outdoors. They had with them,
extra clothing, food, lots of water, headlamps, matches and a whistle. The boys
remained together, built a fire and planned to wait until the light of morning to
hike back to the cabin. Rescuers located the three shortly after 5:00 am. on Wednesday,
August 12, 2015.

information released: At
around 10:47pm, on August 11, 2015, Boulder County Communications received a
call about three teenage males (15-17 years of age), who had not returned from
a fishing trip in the Allenspark area of Boulder County, Colorado, after
leaving to fish at around 6:30pm. The three teens were staying with
others at a nearby cabin, but this was their first time to the area.
The three teens
went fishing at a nearby pond, but those who remained at the cabin, were not
sure which pond they went to. Attempts had been made by those at the
cabin, to locate the boys after they had not returned for quite some time, but
those attempts to locate them were unsuccessful.
Due to their ages,
unfamiliarity with the area, and temperatures in the 40’s, with drizzle
falling, the decision was made by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office to start
a search and rescue effort. In addition to personnel from the Sheriff’s
Office, Allenspark Fire Protection District, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and
Front Range Rescue Dogs were called to the area, to help search for the boys.
As of the time of
this press release, the search for the teens continues. Updates about the
teens’ status will be released when they become available.
County Sheriff’s Office case number for this incident is 1515-4541.
