Vehicle fire in Gordon Gulch

A vehicle fire on Forest Service Road 226 ignited two neighboring trees but was quickly extinguished.

Boulder County, Colo. - Just before 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, Boulder County Communications received a 9-1-1 call from Gordon Gluch near Nederland stating that a vehicle was on fire on Forest Service Road 226. Deputies and fire personnel responded and located a 2009 Mercedes 4-door sedan fully engulfed by fire. The vehicle was approximately 3/4 of a mile from the Peak-to-Peak Highway on Forest Service Road 226 on a dead-end spur northeast of Forest Service Road 233.

Fire personnel from the Indian Peaks and Nederland fire protection districts were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire. The fire ignited two nearby trees and burned the grass and duff immediately surrounding the vehicle. The vehicle is a total loss.

Deputies learned through their investigation that the owner of the Mercedes and his friend were in Gordon Gulch looking for a place to camp. The Forest Service road became too rough to continue in their sedan and they became high-centered on a tree stump as they attempted to turn around on the road. Attempts to free the vehicle from the tree stump by accelerating eventually led the vehicle to catch fire. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

The associated case number for this incident is 16-3530.
