INTERN: Intake Division Boulder County Housing and Human Services

Time Commitment & Minimum Age: Must be 18 years of age or older and have vehicle available for transportation with a valid CO drivers license. BSW or MSW student wanted for 10-20 hours/week. Days may vary, but looking for semester or longer commitment. A weekly schedule will be established based on the needs of the intern and program. Second year/Concentration year field placement with a focus in child welfare is ideal. Child welfare stipend students encouraged to apply.

3460 N. Broadway St. Boulder, CO 80304. Travel to home visits, court, meetings, etc.; accounts for 50% of time.

Program Summary:

To develop a broad understanding of the Colorado Child Welfare System with an emphasis in the Intake Division of the Family and Children Services department of Boulder County. The intake division is the first point of contact that families have if a referral is accepted through the Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline Reporting System.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Utilize family engagement skills to mitigate risk and enhance safety for children and families in Boulder County
  • Assess allegations of child abuse and neglect by conducting High Risk Assessments and Family Assessment Responses (FAR), using the Differential Response model and framework
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, schools, medical personnel, mental health agencies, courts, and providers caring for children
  • Learn and be responsible for extensive case documentation, which could include preparing court reports and social histories
  • Assess for services and resources that best meet a family’s needs at the time of contact
  • Participate in weekly group supervisions, RED teams, and family meetings
Qualifications and Requirements:

Seeking an individual with strong interpersonal skills, including being able to work with diverse staff and clients. A strengths based perspective with strong engagement skills and flexibility is ideal. The candidate should have good time management, prioritization, and organizational skills. Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as basic computer skills are necessary.

Training Dates and Information:

On-the-job training will be provided and shadowing various caseworkers throughout the course of the internship will be provided. Participation in county trainings including Partnering for Safety will be available. Additionally, several in-house trainings on various topics related to child welfare and case work practice are provided throughout the year by Boulder County Human Services, and student interns are welcome to participate. Weekly supervision will be provided.
