Missing snowshoer found after 8-hour search

Boulder County, Colo. - Today, Feb. 22, shortly after 9:00 a.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a call from a concerned family member about an overdue family member who had not yet returned from snowshoeing.

The 47-year-old woman left Boulder yesterday morning to go snowshoeing on the Jenny Creek Trail, starting at the Eldora Nordic Center shortly after 9:30 a.m. She had not returned yesterday afternoon, as expected, which was discovered this morning, prompting their call to our dispatch center. Search and rescue crews mobilized and began searching.

They started their search on and around the Jenny Creek Trail and spent approximately eight hours on the ground and also had resources in the air looking for the missing woman. She was found alive by ground searchers approximately 200 feet off the trail. She was evacuated from the area via snowmobile and then transported to a local hospital via a medical helicopter. She sustained serious injuries after spending the night outside but is expected to survive.

Agencies involved in this search and rescue included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Boulder Emergency Squad, Eldora Ski Patrol, City of Boulder Water Utilities Department, U.S. Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, American Medical Response, Colorado Search and Rescue, Nederland Fire Protection District, Northern Colorado Med Evac, Flight for Life Colorado, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, Regional Transportation District and Alpine Rescue Team.
