Paraglider crashes near Wonderland Lake

Boulder County, Colo. - On Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at approximately 12:22 p.m., the Boulder County Communications was notified of a paraglider who had crashed near the paragliding hill, just west of Wonderland Lake.

The 58-year-old male had just launched when a strong gust of wind caused a corner of his canopy to collapse on itself putting him into a spiral from which he was unable to recover. As a result of the canopy collapse, he crashed shortly thereafter, sustaining serious injuries.

Firefighters from Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District and Boulder Fire - Rescue along with rangers from the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks were directed in by other paragliders in the area and began providing medical care to the injured male. Shortly after, paramedics from American Medical Response arrived and assisted with additional care.

Rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group packaged the injured paraglider into a beanbag splint and a litter and evacuated him uphill to the road using a rope system. The injured male was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Agencies assisting with this rescue effort included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Fire -Rescue, Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, and American Medical Response.
