Boulder County Motor Vehicle Offices Are Closed Effective Tuesday, March 17

Most services are available online including: first-time vehicle registration*, vehicle registration renewal / tag renewal (even when expired or in the grace month), duplicate registration or title requests, address changes, disability parking, and more.

*Please note that you will need a completed title to be able to register your new vehicle online. If you made a financed purchase, the dealer will send the title paperwork to us to be processed. Title paperwork may take longer than usual due to COVID-19 closures (check the status of your paperwork here). For used vehicles, you will also need a VIN verification. If you made a cash purchase, the dealer may send the paperwork directly to you. In this case, you will not be able to title or register your vehicle until our offices re-open.

If your temporary plates expire while you are waiting for your completed title, we recommend that you contact the dealership to request a new temporary permit. If you are unable to obtain a new permit, please email our office at or call 303-413-7710 to request an extension letter.

Due to the interruptions in service caused by the COVID-19 closures, we have requested that law enforcement use discretion when contacting motorists with recently expired plates or registration issues.

Financed Purchase Checklist

Provide the following to register a vehicle purchased from an out-of-state dealer, if financed:

  • Complete paperwork from the lien holder if not sent to the Motor Vehicle Division
  • Security agreement or loan documents

Cash Purchase Checklist

Provide the following to register a vehicle purchased from an out-of-state dealer, if paid in cash:

  • Secure and Verifiable ID
  • Title (notarized if required on the title)
  • Bill of sale or dealer invoice
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Applicable sales tax or proof of paid sales tax
  • Odometer disclosure statement if the vehicle is less than ten years old:
    • Disclose on title, secure dealer bill of sale or secure power of attorney
    • Include odometer reading
    • Hand-printed names and signatures of buyers and sellers (required)
  • Weight slip is required for the following:
    • Motor homes, buses, cargo vans, and trucks if the empty weight is over 4,500 pounds and not listed on title
    • Trailers weighing more than 2,000 pounds
  • Proof of emissions test, if required:

Estimated Fees

Registration fees cannot be estimated over the phone or by email. Estimates may be obtained online.

Registration Timelines

Vehicles must be registered within 60 days of purchase.

License Plate Information

Colorado issues license plates for a 12-month period. Renew your registration during the month indicated on the registration or during the following month, known as the one-month grace period.

Late Fees

Colorado law requires residents to pay late fees. Late fees may not exceed $100. Temporary permits are not subject to a one-month grace period (C.R.S. 42-3-112, 42-3-114).
